The CNC (National Short Film Centre) presents “Corti d’autore|8” – MUNK’S UNFINISHED MASTERPIECE at Cinema Massimo

Cinema Massimo - 16 June 2010, at 8.45 p.m.

The CNC (National Short Film Centre), supported by the National AIACE Italian Association of Friends of Art Film and the National Museum of Cinema, presents Corti d'autore|8 MUNK’S UNFINISHED MASTERPIECE at Cinema Massimo, Screen 3. Following the short film shown in the last edition of this festival, here is another rare tribute to the Polish film director who died unexpectedly in 1961, using exceptional scenes from the feature film he never finished, presented posthumously in Cannes in 1964: Passenger (Pasazerka) by Andrzej Munk (Poland, 1961-63, 58’30”). The film is one of the most extraordinary descriptions of the world of the concentration camp and the relationship between victim and executioner, with interaction from Hannah Arendt’s work on the banality of evil and the human and cultural experience of the novelist Tadeusz Borowski, a survivor of Auschwitz.

As part of the W L’ITALIA! The south as portrayed by the south series, we offer two powerful images – one bursting with vital energy and one of despair – from our South with Simone Salvemini’s award-winning I fratelli semaforo (The Traffic Light Brothers) (Italy, 2002, 8’30”) and Fulvio Pepe’s A chi è già morto e a chi sta per morire (To The Dead, to the Dying) (Italy, 2008, 21’).

The evening will feature contributions from Goffredo Fofi and Gianni Volpi, film critics and historians, and the film director Simone Salvemini.

Admission: 3 euros; for more details, Tel: 011 5361468; e-mail: info@cnc-italia.it; www.cnc-italia.it.

The “Corti d’autore” series will resume in autumn, following a summer break.
