Film Restoration Laboratory
Since September 2020, a digital Restoration Laboratory has been operating at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema’s Film Archive. This new technological facility was established to strengthen the Museum’s policies for the preservation, conservation, restoration and accessibility of the film materials in its collection.
The Film Archive’s Laboratory provides the following services:
repair of film materials;
chemical treatment of nitrate and acetate film;
cleaning of positive and negative film in 8 mm, S8mm, 16 mm, S16mm and 35 mm formats;
scanning of positive and negative film in Pathé Baby, 8 mm, S8mm, 16 mm, S16mm and 35 mm formats;
scanning of optical and magnetic soundtracks, whether separate or combined;
digital image restoration;
colour correction;
production of digital preservation masters and access copies for online platforms and cinema screenings.
The Museo Nazionale del Cinema’s Film Archive is actively involved in the restoration of Italian and international film heritage, working in partnership with FIAF-affiliated film archives, private collectors and rights holders.
In particular, the Film Archive promotes restoration projects devoted to films produced during Turin’s silent-film era, as well as works by filmmakers with links to Turin and the surrounding area. These projects also encompass amateur cinema and productions created on alternative media, including video formats.
