DIETRO LO SPECCHIO. Ingmar Bergman nel Fondo Sablich del Museo Nazionale del Cinema

2018 marks the centenary of the birth of Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007). The son of a Lutheran pastor, as well as a playwright, theatre director and writer, Bergman made his debut as a screenwriter in the first half of the 1940s before moving on to directing. Over the course of a career spanning five decades, he became one of the most important and complex auteurs in the history of cinema.

The Mario Gromo Bibliomediateca pays tribute to Ingmar Bergman with the exhibition DIETRO LO SPECCHIO. Ingmar Bergman nel Fondo Sablich del Museo Nazionale del Cinema (Behind the Mirror. Ingmar Bergman in the Sablich Collection), which opens on 12 November at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition will be open to the public until 21 December, 2018.

Drawing on the extremely rich documentation that Sergio Sablich (1951–2005) — a musicologist with a passion for Bergman and Swedish cinema — collected over the years, the exhibition offers visitors a journey through the ways in which magazines, both specialist and popular, Italian and international, highlighted the figure of Bergman and his films. It is a journey through the faces of actors and actresses, suggestions and atmospheres, well-known and lesser-known films, in which the director emerges as an iconic and highly distinctive figure, capable of entering the collective imagination.

The Sablich Collection, donated to the Museo Nazionale del Cinema by the musicologist’s family in 2007, stands out for the richness and completeness of its materials dedicated to the great Swedish master.

The exhibition is accompanied by a film programme featuring six films made between 1951 and 1960, a period in which the director was developing a distinctive language and defining the personal themes that would later find full expression in the works that established his fame: Un’estate d’amore, Donne in attesa, Monica e il desiderio, Una lezione d’amore, Sorrisi di una notte d’estate, L’occhio del diavolo.
