Screenings calendar

Wed 6, at 6.00 p.m.

F. W. Murnau

Nosferatu, a symphony of horror (Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens)

(Germany 1921, 106’, DCP, b/w, or. caps. it. s/t)

The capital film of silent cinema. Drawn from Dracula by Bram Stoker, the immortal tale of Nosferatu, the un-dead who spreads the plague, and absorbs and extinguishes vital force, caring for the balance of the universe, until a female sacrifice will make dawn rise over the liberated city.

Wed 13, at 6.00 p.m.

Carl Th. Dreyer

The passion of Joan of Arc (La passion de Jeanne d'Arc)

(France 1928, 97’, Hd, b/w, or. caps. it. s/t)

The film that imposed Dreyer upon worldwide attention. The final hours of the French heroine are reconstructed, as she initially signs an abjuration after being subjected to tortures and humiliations, but then retracts, supported by her faith, and is led to the stake. Dreyer manages to create a personal style, which is able to reach the psychological depth of his characters through extremely natural images and stories. Silent film with soundtrack music on pianoforte.
