This book reproduces all the photographs displayed in the exhibition entitled Ecce homo. L’immagine di Gesù nella storia del cinema (The image of Jesus in the history of cinema). It opens with three critiques written by Dario Viganò, Jean-Michel Frodon, Nicoletta Pacini and Silvio Alovisio, which examine in detail the theme of Christ’s portrayal in film from a historical and theoretical point of view. This is followed by a rich photographic section which traces the exhibition’s two parts. The first part draws on 30 photographs to explore how Jesus was portrayed throughout the history of film, from the first “Passions” of French and Italian silent film to more recent productions, such as Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. The second, more extensive part presents the main episodes in Jesus’s life, from the Nativity to the Resurrection, comparing several pictorial versions of these events. The result is a striking journey, where analogies, divergences and reworkings emerge, thanks also to the wealth and variety of advertising materials presented. The book ends with a filmography of the works on display, compiled by Tamara Sillo.
