Torino Encounters is a project conceived and commissioned in 2025 by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin to mark the 25th anniversary of its opening inside the Mole Antonelliana.

The initiative invites leading contemporary filmmakers to engage with the Museum, its archives, its collections and the city of Turin, turning them into material for new short films and new reflections on cinema.

The first film produced within the project is Ecce Mole by Heinz Emigholz, premiered at the New York Film Festival 2025. The film portrays the Mole Antonelliana through a dialogue with another work by Alessandro Antonelli, Casa Scaccabarozzi, known as the “Fetta di Polenta”, offering a rigorous and original reflection on architecture, cinema and the symbolic power of the building.

The second chapter is Torino Shadow by Jia Zhang-Ke, premiered at the Festival de Cannes 2026. Written specifically for the initiative and starring Zhao Tao, the film is an original fictional story set between Taishan, China and Turin. Distance, connection, and cinema are the themes through which the Museum emerges not only as a place of memory, but also as a source of new creation.

The third film is Trailer for Dante’s “Paradiso” by Radu Jude, which will be presented at Il Cinema Ritrovato, Bologna 2026. Inspired by one of the Museum’s archival collections, the project continues Torino Encounters’ dialogue between film history, museum heritage and contemporary cinematic experimentation.

Further works are currently in development: Parvenza by Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio, an untitled project by Jessica Sarah Rinland, and an untitled project by Aleksandr Sokurov.

Through Torino Encounters, the Museo Nazionale del Cinema strengthens its role as a living institution: a place that preserves cinema’s memory while actively inspiring and producing new works.
